New Modern Library CPH

How does a “visit” in the library look like in future.

As we live in times of rapid and continuous change it is hard to say what kind of building is needed for information exchange. Or if there’s really a need for built environments in general. This concept tries to figure out the main goals of libraries in the next age. A new expression comes into play: Edutainment.

The New Modern Library of Copenhagen should be considered as adaptive space where unusual synergies and cooperation can take place.

PROGRAM

To evaluate a possible program it is important to consider current discussions about libraries. It is very clear that the attraction factor of athe “library 3.0” has to be much bigger than it has been before.

This project delivers four general ideas of Space definition. Performative Space, Meeting Space, Learning Space, and Inspiration Space.

This leads to the rest of the program which always relates on these macro categories. With these definitions we are able to determine future activities in the library. With different users, operation hours and different media there’s a huge variety of actions we have to face. To interpret these we startet to classify them into four general terms:

Immerse, discover, experience and collaborate.

CIRCULATION SYSTEM

The obtained system of program distribution will be applied to the project. Unlike the expected arrangement of the 4 space definitions vertically we decided to stack the program horizontally in a row. This allows the library to be varied in its experience. There’s a big difference wether you stay in just one space or you discover all places horizontally. The main circulation is situated in the southern part of the building.

Due to a promoted friction of users and short distances to all areas of the new modern library there’s a amount of stairs above average.

The Soul of the library is the Data it contains.
The way of information exchange has no predefined format and can take place in very different places through very different media and actions.

The conventional book shelf still has its right to exist but it is important to provide a lot more possibilities to access information.
